Anyone can become a friend at any time and to anyone. For example, Skipper, an Australian Shepherd Dog, had the opportunity to make friends with a humpback whale.

The one-year-old puppy recently met several friendly humpback whales that swam to his owner's boat.

The video of Skipper's surprisingly calm approach to the whales quickly went viral.

"He seemed to really enjoy watching them. It's funny that he didn't bark," says Nancy Black, the dog's owner and a marine biologist who runs a whale watch in Monterey Bay, California.

An encounter with whales

That day, Black was taking her clients ashore when they spotted a group of whales. She stopped the boat, so everyone could watch.

The whales quickly headed straight for the boat, but they were not only friendly, but also quite playful. The animals circled around the boat, actively made fountains and even spied on the Skipper.

The dog saw the whales for the first time. The dog's owner noted that it seemed to be "hypnotized".

The video shows Skipper trying to get a better look at the whales by placing his front paws on the boat's railing.
