At Eurovision 2014, Conchita Wurst caused a sensation. The bearded woman, who participated in the contest representing Austria, captivated the audience with her fiery performance and the song "Rise Like a Phoenix."
Many newly acquired fans of Conchita were disappointed to learn that the eccentric singer was merely the alter ego of Austrian musician Thomas Neuwirth.
Until recently, Thomas continued to use the persona that people loved. However, it was recently revealed that Conchita Wurst has changed her image and started to look completely different!
Thomas Neuwirth and his alter ego.
Thomas Neuwirth, an Austrian, is a professional singer, model, and drag queen who has been performing on the big stage since 2006.
Initially, Thomas started his career under his own name. However, in 2011, he decided to win people's hearts by portraying the eccentric bearded singer Conchita Wurst. And he achieved considerable success!
Thomas deliberately created the noticeable and flamboyant Conchita. "The bearded woman is a bold statement, a catalyst for discussions about norms. When it comes to personal freedom, appearance and gender play no role. Everyone has the right to live as they want, as long as it doesn't harm anyone," Neuwirth asserts.
Conchita's career.
Thomas first appeared in this persona in 2011 on the stage of one of Austria's most popular reality shows. Since then, he regularly performed under the name Conchita and, in 2012, attempted to compete in the Eurovision selection. Madame Wurst placed second, but the group that won the competition didn't even make it to the final!
In 2014, the Austrian authorities finally allowed Conchita to participate in Eurovision, and they made the right decision. The bold bearded woman became Neuwirth's trademark. As Conchita, the musician recorded two albums and 14 singles. However, it's worth noting that in all interviews, Neuwirth clearly distinguished between his daily life and his stage persona.
Farewell to Conchita.
At one point, Thomas joked, "I practically live a double life. On weekends, I'm a very lazy guy, but on weekdays, I'm an extremely busy lady." However, since 2017, Neuwirth began to realize that it was time to gradually say goodbye to Conchita. According to the singer, this persona had almost exhausted itself. It seems that's exactly what happened.
In early June 2023, Conchita Wurst changed her image, and she did it abruptly. As mentioned above, Thomas Neuwirth used to clearly distinguish himself as a man and his female persona. However, now on social media, there are many completely masculine photos of Thomas. It appears that Neuwirth has indeed decided to retire his female persona.
Many fans of the Austrian artist sincerely hope that he hasn't completely parted ways with the Conchita project. Others warmly welcome the changes in Neuwirth's life.
At the very least, Thomas now looks very good, so bidding farewell to Conchita has undoubtedly worked in his favor. Let's see how all of this will influence the future creativity of the eccentric musician!
