As we know, pleats are an essential attribute of classic men's pants.
But did you know that they did not arise due to fashion trends?
It turns out that until pants were exclusively handmade, there were no pleats.
Pleats appeared entirely by chance, thanks to industrial production.
In the second half of the 19th century, factories began to produce a large number of pairs of pants that needed to be sold and transported.
Large quantities of goods were shipped by sea, with the aim of fitting as much merchandise as possible into the ship's holds.
Therefore, the pants were heavily pressed before being loaded.
When the folded pants were stacked on top of each other during transportation, creases appeared on them that were practically impossible to iron out.
Sellers called these creases pleats and presented the pants as a new fashion trend.
Some people would iron out the creases, while others didn't care or believed them as they were.
Gradually, this style gained popularity and became so well-established that we still wear pants with pleats to this day.
Not everyone can properly iron out pleats as perfectly as an uncomfortable sea voyage did.
